How to prepare for Ascot or a summer wedding outfit – without the stress

Women wearing hats, no hat and a fascinator

Whether you’re heading to Ascot or attending a summer wedding, the excitement often comes with a side order of wardrobe panic. What do you wear? When should you start looking? Do you need a hat? And what about the weather or temperature?

Let’s take the stress out of it. Here’s your calm, step‑by‑step guide to feeling confident, comfortable, and beautifully put‑together on the day.

When should I start looking?

Earlier than you think.

Most women leave it too late and end up panic‑buying something that doesn’t feel like “them”. To avoid that:

  • Start looking 6–8 weeks before the event (Ladies Day at Ascot is 18th June this year: 23rd May is eight weeks before)
  • If you want a hat made, allow at least 6 weeks as a good milliner will have a busy schedule
  • If you’re tricky to fit or want something specific, start even earlier

Giving yourself time means you can choose something that truly suits your colouring, your shape, and your personality — not just whatever was left in your size, and it can help with budget planning too.

Where should I look?

You don’t need to trawl the entire internet. A focused search is far more effective (consider using AI too), thinking about your budget if there is one:

  • Department stores (John Lewis, Fenwick, Selfridges) — lots of brands in one place
  • Independent boutiques — great for something unique
  • Rental platforms — perfect for one‑off events
  • Online brands with good returns — try at home, keep what works
  • Local milliners — for hats that actually flatter your face shape.

And of course, knowing your colours and body shape narrows the search dramatically. It stops you wasting time on things that were never going to work.

What should I be looking for this year?

Trends are fun, but they should never overpower you. Here are the wearable ones worth knowing about:

  • Soft pastels and botanical prints
  • Modern tailoring (waistcoats, soft suits, jumpsuits) as dress alternatives
  • Clean, column silhouettes
  • Textured fabrics like lace, broderie and jacquard
  • Statement sleeves or asymmetric necklines
  • Bold colour blocking.

This season is all about glamour and luxurious materials. Dressing up is back!

But the real magic happens when you choose colours that harmonise with your natural colouring and shapes that flatter your proportions. That’s what makes you look effortlessly stylish, feel terrific and will gain you admiring glances or comments. Don’t forget you’ll be on camera quite a bit these days!

Can I use something in my wardrobe that isn’t on trend now?

That would be a great “sustainable” choice, but it would depend what’s in your wardrobe! Most items from the last decade or so would absolutely not look out of place, and it might be that a [new?] trench coat (very ‘in’ this season) will suddenly make you feel current (plus be practical if the weather isn’t turning out that well).

How do I look nice if I’m not my ideal weight?

Firstly — you deserve to feel lovely right now, exactly as you are.

If you’re feeling a bit self‑conscious, here are some gentle, confidence‑boosting tips:

  • Choose fabrics with structure and room, not clingy, or
  • Look for ruching, wrap shapes or soft draping
  • Be clever about where hems fall, which draw the eye
  • Use colour placement to your advantage
  • Shapewear is optional — comfort comes first
  • Prioritise outfits that let you move, breathe and enjoy the day

The goal isn’t to hide your body — it’s to dress it kindly – and enjoy yourself at the event.

Do I wear a hat or not? What are the rules?

This is where confusion reigns, especially for Ascot.

Ascot rules

  1. Royal Enclosure:
    * hats are required
    * the base must be 4 inches or more
    * fascinators are NOT allowed.
  2. Queen Anne/Village Enclosure:
    * Fascinators are fine
    * Hats are optional (and elevate the look).

Weddings

  • No strict rules
  • Hats are optional
  • Fascinators are acceptable, but modern hats or structured headbands feel fresher
  • If you’re unsure, a hat that complements your face shape and height is always a safe, elegant choice. See my other blogs about dressing for Ascot and wearing a hat.

How long does it take to have a hat made?

If you can’t find the right hat (whether in a shop, dress agency, pre-loved, Ebay or Vinted), a milliner can create one that perfectly matches your outfit. I know several locally to Southampton that I can recommend.

Typical timelines:

  • 6 weeks for a bespoke hat (although you may be lucky to get one in less time)
  • Some offer rush services
  • Take your outfit or a fabric swatch to get the colour right

A made‑to‑measure hat is often more comfortable and flattering than something off the shelf.

What if the weather is hot, cold or wet? Do I need a “Plan B”?

The short answer: yes a Plan B is a good idea — but it doesn’t need to be a whole new outfit.

If it’s hot:

  • Choose breathable fabrics
  • Consider anti‑chafe shorts
  • Opt for lighter hats

If it’s cold:

  • Add a pashmina, tailored blazer or elegant coat
  • Closed‑toe shoes help keep you warm
  • Wear thicker denier hosiery

If it’s wet:

  • Avoid suede
  • Choose shoes with grip and be careful of leather soles – have them resoled with rubber to avoid slippiness in wet conditions.
  • A structured, pretty, colourful (or see-through) umbrella can look chic

Your Plan B

Think of it as a weather‑proofing kit:

  • A layer
  • A shoe swap
  • A different hat if needed

Not a whole new outfit — just smart adjustments.
